Now that we have had some time to absorb the activity in this space, I can say that Slack turned out ultimately to be the likely successor to Google Wave. Now that Salesforce owns it, Slack is getting big-boy resources to further innovate and replace the old work surfaces of the past.

I no longer read email at all, except with a search filter and when I believe something useful might be in there. The account creation process was cumbersome and difficult (very high friction) and even having battered my way through the Captchas and the retries, I found that the site was tricky to navigate, polluted by poor design (for instance, a clunky black block "decorates" each page reminding me about what they say the service is meant for), and the only occasionally useful metrics are surrounded by information that either does not pertain to me (such as a large political ad today on the margin) or data that has no meaning.

I cannot recommend this service, and I'm certain I would not pay them for their subscriber services. Even though, we all think Facebook will be here forever we need to consider keeping our stories that these services weave for us.

It really is a shame about Wave. Google really has some great ideas, and I was very excited about the realtime collaboration. I remember suggesting Wave to you back at Cinequest a couple years ago to organize our "Inside" team. Great idea, but too complicated to explain to the layman.

I did get it to use it a few times, and it was pretty useful for doing rough cut review sessions for clients. The hard part was explaining and getting someone to actually use it. So, I am sure my Wave inbox is pretty empty. Sad...

Well, with change comes new opportunity. I'll be checking out hangouts soon. Anyone up for some "live" shows of local music on a "+" hangout?

Well as we say goodbye to Wave, perhaps we should all get together and do a final "Wave." I'm getting 25 seconds of delay in getting pages that I click to.

The update (and migration to new server) isn't finished as I write, but I really hope that response time will improve significantly when all is said and done.

I have to say that for about the next week, I'll be using bit.ly for my URL shortening needs. I worked on a post for this blog using the Flock "blog editor" and the speed eventually forced me to stop.

I'm not a big fan of editors that insert a lot of localized style markup in your work -- such that when you need to actually edit the HTML or CSS by hand, there's a big mess to sort through.

Flock is a serious offender in this case.
